"Mummy can I have a lollipop?"
"No, not now dear"
"Why not mummy?"
"Because it will spoil your tea"
"But if I promise to eat all of my tea can I have a lollipop then?"
"No because lollipops are
bad for your teeth"
"But if I promise that I will eat all of my tea and brush my teeth straight away after?"
"No"
"Why not?"
"Because I said so"

"Daddy I love you"
"I love you too darling"
"Daddy, can I have a lollipop?"
"Of course you can darling, just make sure you brush your teeth and eat all of
your tea after."

The child then eats their lollipop whilst Mum and
Dad have a little argument about parenting.

All children are amazing salespeople. From a very early age they start to develop their sales skills. They have no fear of rejection and are extremely resourceful and adaptable.

The example to the left is a typical conversation that all parents will have with their children at some stage. It is a battle between the child and the mother and you would imagine that the mother has the best skills to deal with the situation.

This is not the case.

Whenever the child is faced with a reason as to why they cannot have the lollipop they are able to overcome the reason by applying a logical argument. The child really wants the lollipop and will keep trying different approaches to make sure that they get it.

In the end the mother has to resort to an irrational argument because the resourceful child has skilfully backed her into a corner.

The child has demonstrated the power of being focused on achieving their goal.
